The Thread

There's a thread, not a metaphor an actual thread, the thing that ran from the first episode to the last, the thing that connected impostor syndrome to the economy of striving, to the belief in separation to the question of whether any of it was ever real. That thread didn't start with impostor syndrome. We just picked it up there because that's where most people first notice they're holding it. Eleven episodes later, here's what we know. The thread didn't lead to an answer. It led to a question that dissolves.

Here's what we did. Started with a feeling, the feeling that you're not quite enough that someone is going to notice that the gap between who you are and who you're presenting yourself as is going to get someone's attention eventually.

And instead of trying to close the gap, instead of building a better version of the performance, we asked where the gap came from. That's a different question than the one the whole self improvement industry is built on. The industry asks how do I get better at this? We asked what is this? Really? Turns out when you follow that question all the way back, you don't end up at a strategy. You end up at a perception, the perception that you are separate in the recognition that the perception was never accurate.

The argument is over, not because we want it, because we found out it was built on a premise that was never true. You can't really win an argument that was unnecessary to begin with. You can only notice that you've stopped having it. When is the last time you were in an argument that was stupid two minutes after it ended? Same principle, bigger argument.

Here's what that looks like in practice. The inbox is still full. The comparison engine still fires up. Someone still has more followers, more money, more success, more health, more beauty, more strength, more love, more, more, more than you. The economy of striving is still open for business, same hours, same storefront, same product. The dream doesn't disappear because you understand it. Here's where the ego gets creative, Because the moment you understand the dream, the ego has a new move. Now it performs understanding.

Now it turns I see the illusion into the new achievement. Now enlightenment becomes the thing your auditioning for. Enlightenment becomes the ultimate goal within the economy of striving. The temptation to fall for it is subtle. Don't understanding. This is not escape. It's just a clearer view from the same place you were standing. What changes is not the dream. What changes is what you mistake yourself for inside the dream. The fracture was interpretive, which means the repair all of it. Every strategy, every optimization, every self improvement project you've ever undertaken because you believed something was wrong was also interpretive.

Not useless, just not load bearing. You were never behind, you were never incomplete, were misperceiving the starting point. Here's the thing about a thread. You don't follow it to find the end. You follow it to find out what it's connected to. We've spent eleven episodes finding out what the thread was connected to on this end, where it came from, what it ran through, what it was holding in place. That's the first arc the argument. The thread doesn't stop here, it just changes direction.

The argument is over. The practice began ends, not a new set of instructions, not a system, not ten steps to something, just the question that's left standing when everything built on a false premise has been cleared away? What does it look like to see from here? Sit with this?

The thread doesn't end here. It just changes what it's pulling toward.
