The Final Illusion

I used to teach leadership. I wrote my own program. I called it Within, Leading from the Inside, wrote it, taught it, rewrote it, kept teaching it, rewrote it again, sold it for thousands of dollars, got rave reviews. People said things like better than Cardone, more impactful than Maxwell. Could have saved myself tens of thousands if this existed twenty years ago. And then I realized that I was doing exactly what every other leadership program was doing. I was taking people's money while the needle stayed stuck.

The program wasn't the problem. The program was actually very good. The problem was that I had taken a genuine recognition that leadership comes from the inside and turned it into a product, a curriculum, a thing to sell. The costume fit really well. I believed in it. That's what makes it the final illusion. The ego's most sophisticated move isn't cynical. It's sincere. Here's what the ego does when the argument is over. It doesn't argue, It doesn't defend the old menu. It does something far more more elegant than that.

It picks up the recognition and carries it into the next performance. Now, instead of auditioning for competence, you're auditioning for enlightenment. Instead of proving you're enough, you're proving you've seen through the proving.

Instead of building a self that performs, you're building a self that has transcended, performing same operating system, better vocabulary. Even the awakening can become a costume. Even the rebellion can become a brand. Even the freedom can become a fortress.

The god of more doesn't disappear when you name it. It just changes what it's asking for more of. This is the final illusion because it's the hardest one to see. Every other illusion in this series had an outside the belief in separation. You could question the foundation, the false menu, you could feel the edges of it. The courtroom, you could dissolve the premise. This one is harder because it uses the tools of recognition to sustain itself. It speaks the right language, it names the right things.

It even sounds like this podcast, which brings me to the second time it happened. Episode five of this series. I was recording an episode about the economy of striving, about how the belief that I am not enough drives every performance, every optimization, every attempt to be more than what I already am, And mid sentence, I caught myself thinking about catchphrases.

I was literally talking about not performing and simultaneously trying to figure out how to make the performance more compelling, thinking about personal branding, thinking about what someone else said works, thinking about secret sauce. I said it out loud in the episode because it was happening in real time, and pretending otherwise would have been the thing I was talking about not doing. The content about not performing had become a performance. I'm not immune. The ego's ruse is sophisticated.

If it happened to me while recording episodes about this, it's happening to you while listening to them, not because you're doing something wrong. Because this is what the final illusion does. It moves into whatever space clarity creates and sets up shop there. The person who reads every book about presence and quietly becomes an expert in presence. The person who studies non attachment and becomes attached to their non attachment. The person who dismantles their performance based identity and builds a new identity around having dismantled it.

All of it is the god of more wearing the clothes of the God of enough, same alter, different idol. What do you do with this? Not much? Actually you notice it. You don't perform the noticing. You don't build a curriculum around the noticing. You don't start a podcast about the noticing.

You just notice, and then you notice the next thing and the next, not as a practice, not as a system, not as the most enlightened version of yourself, finally arriving, just as what's actually happening right now. Several months before this series existed, I wrote something I didn't know it would become the close of this arc. It just came out on a page and I left it there. It said, even my awakening can become a costume, even my rebellion can become a brand. Even my freedom can become a fortress.

So I pause, not to escape the illusion, but to remember that I was the one projecting it all along.

There is no enemy, there is no rescuer, there is no finish line. There is only this moment, And in this moment, I stop bowing to what I built. I no longer need to escape the illusion. I simply stop energizing it. There there is no one left to impress no audience to perform. Four just stillness where wholeness returns.
